You know, that guy with the pet drum?

WWW
« on: April 07, 2009, 03:00:23 PM »

Since my modding has been focusing on another mod that's almost complete, I decided to release what I have done so far with this mod.

Download Link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LWXMMDBB (possible mirrors to come soon, feel free to put on lavalit)

From the Readme:
Phantasy Star Online.. if you dumped me on an island and left me only one video game to play, I'd probably choose that one. PSO just may be my all-time favorite game, so needless to say I had a lot of fun whipping this mod up.

~Game Modes~

Though Episodes II and IV are now added, the actual stage code (spawns, etc) are practically identical to the stage in Episode I. Only one level per episode, at the moment.

-Episode I-
The search for Red Ring Rico, and the investigation on the disappearance of Pioneer 1 on Ragol.

-Episode II-
The search for Heathcliff Flowen, and the investigation of Dr. Osto's laboratories scattered across Gal Del Val island.

-Episode IV-
The investigation of a mysterious meteor that landed on Ragol.

~Controls~

This mod uses the attack, special, and jump buttons.

Recommended control layout for PSP (Xbox and DC users should have similiar setups):
Attack1 - Square
Special - Triangle
Jump - Cross/X

Remember to set these controls in Options->Control Options->Setup Player #!

~Characters~

There are 5 characters to choose from. Below is a list of them and their moveset:

(Key Legend)
A - Attack button
S - Special button
J - Jump button
U - Up on the D-Pad/Directional keys/Analog pad
D - Down on the D-Pad/Directional keys/Analog pad

(Example)
AAA = Press the Attack button 3 times.

-HUmar-
AAA - Main attack string. Third hit launches enemy forward.
AS/AAS - Mid-combo attack. A powerful hit that launches enemies forward very far.
S - Zonde (lightning spell). Attacks at a set range, does little damage but stuns the enemy. Takes 25 MP to use.
JA - Jumpattack. Knocks enemies down.
UU/DD - Dodge in the direction you pressed (UU dodges up, etc).

-HUnewearl-
AAA - Main attack string. Third hit launches enemy forward.
AS/AAS - Mid-combo attack. Multiple sword thrusts.
S - Gibarta (intermediate ice spell). Freezes enemies for a short time. Takes 30 MP to use.
JA - Jumpattack. Knocks enemies down.

-RAmarl-
AAA - Main attack string. Shoots non-knockdown bullets each attack.
S - Grenade launcher. Powerful with short range.

-HUcast-
AAA - Main attack string. Third hit launches enemy forward.
AS/AAS - Mid-combo attack. Powerful hit that launches enemies upward.
S - An attack that can hit enemies on both sides of the player.
JA - Jumpattack. Knocks enemies down.
UU/DD - Dodge in the direction you pressed (DD dodges down, etc).

-Sonic-
Will be a secret/unlockable character in the full game, for now is available for testing/fun. Sonic plays VERY differently from the other characters. His moveset will seem a bit limited when compared to the other characters at first, but once you "learn" him, he can be a very powerful and dangerous character to play as.

A - Leaps forward, knocks enemies down.
S - Spin Dash. Charges up briefly, then dashes forward very fast. Knocks enemies very high straight into the air.
J - Yes, Sonic's jump actually does damage. Non-knockdown attack.
JS - Dives straight down. Knockes enemies very far.

~OpenBOR Version~
Because this uses some script, I recommend you use version 3.2252 or higher. It should work fine on all later versions as well. PSP users may want to play with Options->Video Options to make it full screen.

From the Changelog:
~7/16/2009~
-Added one level each for Episode II and Episode IV
-Added music changing script
-Updated Forest I in Episode I
-Added items
-Updated HUmar
-Updated HUcast
-Added HUnewearl
-Added Sonic
-Added loading screens

~4/7/2009~
-Initial release, VERY early demo

Gameplay video, courtesy of 9esferas:

To-Do List:
-Finish Forest completely, start on Caves
-Make the other Episode-specific enemies

Big thanks to Scarlet of Schthack PSO forums for helping me with scenes and MAGs, Captain N of the same place for hosting sound effects from the official game, and everyone else there who helped me with sprite ideas!  Grin

Honestly? It's easier, I don't have to make any animated gifs to show gameplay, and I don't have to wait a week or so before it gets OK'd by one of our boys here.

Plus, this demo is way too short anyways, may not even be worth all that trouble.

*EDIT*

Ah, I still remember leveling up my MAG and spending countless hours of my life killing monsters. I owned the first & second chapter of this for Dreamcast. Nice choices for the race-types character sprites Nick. I love that you added in the MAGs also. When I played this for Dreamcast I played as the HUmar because he could use both a side arm & and sword. Very useful.

I love that you added in the MAGs also.

I just wish I could figure out how to make them actually turn around with you, instead of standing in just one spot. Ah well, it's still not that bad.. I also wish there was a secondary mp bar or something so I can implement Photon Blasts too, but maybe down the line I'll think of something else for that.

I changed around Forest 1. Check it here: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1684/pso0000.gif . I'm going to use the previous background for Forest 2. Also, I'm working on the HUnewearl, as you can see in the attachment.

Update time.

-HUnewearl is 100% finished and 200% broken. The fact that she has Gibarta alone makes her pretty high in character tier so far (out of 4 for the time being), and the rest of her moveset is just nuts. In fact, she actually does the least amount of damage (had to make her super weak to balance her out), and yet she can almost cause as much destruction as HUcast. That isn't to say that the other characters suck (because they don't), but in the right hands HUney is a beast.

-4 kinds of items to pick up: monomate (heal HP), monofluid (heal MP), star atomizer (fully heals both HP/MP), and meseta (adds to your score). Of course, the first three all have the exact same sprites, so just like the real game you'll never know what you get until you pick it up! Also like the real game, meseta drops all over the place. If I ever get the time to take screenshots for it, perhaps I'll add those beloved rare red item boxes... maybe give you an extra life or something.

-Added a new enemy. Who? Find out with screenshots soon to come.

That's all for now, folks.

Screens.

HUmar in Forest:

RAmarl in Temple:
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/2179/psoscreenshot03.png

HUnewearl in Crater:
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6878/psoscreenshot07.png

Ignore the fact that the pics are 480x272, they're only like that because I have it scaled to full-screen on the PSP version. It's really 320x240.
