Okay, so I'm a mugen guy who knows mugen up and down. Can anyone relate bor to mugen? In the sense of adding characters? Can I add characters from my mugen to openbor? Is there a simple way to get started so I can figure it out from there? Thanks for any help

Welcome juduking. We're always happy to see some cross pollination from the Mugen world. Unfortunately there is no way to convert characters directly from Mugen to/from OpenBOR.

OpenBOR and Mugen are apples and oranges as far as the way they work. You can do all the things in OpenBOR that you can and Mugen (and then some actually), but the way you do those things is completely different.

In a nutshell, porting a character from Mugen to OpenBOR is like porting a character from a commercial game to Mugen. You can most certainly do it, but you gotta get your hands dirty. This is why most of the conversions you DO see are outright crap. Few people are willing to put the time in.

This is why we have dozens of clone mods using the same set of 10 moves over and over giving OpeBOR a bad rep. It's our equivalent to your 50000'th "Dark god mode pissed at the world cause I'm still a virgin, Chun li won't give me some and Akuma is my dad ultimate unreal RYU; evil super saiyan XXXXIII edition."

Like DC said, there's no way to directly convert characters.  But if you have sprites from Mugen and know the offsets and delays for all animations, then making an (Open)BOR character from those sprites is not hard at all.

Of course, OpenBOR modding requires more than just character design (levels are important too) but I'm sure you've already thought of that.

BOR modding can be considered a more daunting task than mugen, in my opinion. The avergae mugen dev makes characters or stages or lifebars. The average bor modder makes characters, stages, lifebars, enemies, items/obstacles... just about everything really. And though bor characters aren't as "full fledged" as mugen chars (in terms of moveset), they require just as much balancing and effort to be deemed "good". With mugen you just make a part of the package, with bor you put the whole thing together.

That is so true. Except in that rare case that a whole roster of 'themed' characters are made into one package (hopefully balanced), Mugen is mostly all about the individual characters & not a whole game. Some people treat it like Pokemon that way Smiley. Nothing against Mugen or what it is, I just enjoy the more complete experience I get with OpenBor.
