... actually, no. A single frame from a character is still a sprite. A character is made up of multiple sprites.

Backgrounds also are sprites - and in fact, are often made up of multiple sprites as well.

Well, with the exception of games like Marvel vs Capcom 2, which have 3D backgrounds - they use models instead of sprites.

Actually, phemt is right.

A sprite is defined is a single or group of images that can move with a larger graphic screen. Technically speaking, referring to a single image as a "sprite" is not correct. Images make sprites, not the other way around.

As far as backgrounds vs. sprites, the images we think of as "backgrounds" in professional games could actually could be sprites, layers, or something else entirely. We can guess, but without seeing the code or playing with an emulator that specifies the manor of each graphic, there is no way to know for sure what they really are. It just depends on the capabilities and quirks of the hardware, what the programmer is trying to accomplish, and even his/her personal habits.

In the long run, what difference does it make?

Interesting. Guess that pixel art book I got was wrong.

I'd just always heard that any 2D image in a computer program is a sprite, animated or not - just as any 3D image in a computer program is a model, animated or not.

I mean, we always refer to stuff like this as sprites: http://lavalit.com/index.php/topic,3758.0.html

Pixel art isn't a true sprite. Sprites are supported nativity and have certain predefined rules. A pixel has no such limitations, but has to be generated by the CPU. It's very inefficient and hasn't been a feasible method to make games since long before the 8-bit era.

Yeah, we do. Again, it's technically incorrect, but works in colloquial use. What else would we call them?

My post was made to correct what was wrong, all the frames together form a sprite.
You can trust me.

I used to call those -frames-, as in videogames magazines they were words of high use in the bidimensional era (sprite, frame, palette, parallaxe, etc.)

For what regards the backgrounds, they can be made out of sprites, for example an animated building with lights and people inside moving is made of several frames that form a sprite inside a bigger picture.

Darkstalkers series has some of the best looking backgrounds in a CPS2 game.

I've obviously been using them a lot with my mod.

Looked like Damon and The7k were interested about this discussion. Sorry if we disturbed you  laughing

Anyway until you talk about CPS backgrounds i can't remind an ugly one, they are amazing in most, if not all, cases.
