Yeah, I've been using Athena as well.  I generally prefer speedy characters that can hit and run over slow moving, powerful ones (sorry, Maxima).

Kula. Unlike many SNK characters, she breaks the stereotypes without trying too hard and is just fun to play. Her Crime Buster self is the closest out of the set to retaining the original style. In particular, her freeze grab and breath both fall into the "Should have been seen back in 2005" catagory. But better late then never.

I'd like to say Maxima or Ralf. I tend to like normal sized characters that combine grappling, power, and maneuverability with subtle, less stereotypical drawbacks for game balance (Taki, Ryoko from WH, Galford & Hanzou from SSII, Blue Mary, Ralf/Clark), but Crime Buster Ralf doesn't fit that mold due to lack of grappling technique.

As for Maxima, he isn't huge, but he is still a big slow target, and lacks that extra something a big character needs. If you're going big, make it count! Really, Max from SOR2 is about the only "big" character I've seen done right yet.

Athena is probably the most effective regular PC, but between her and Kula, I'll take Kula because her moves break the BOR mold a little more. Not nearly enough, but doors are opening. Bao? No. Just no. To me there is nothing appealing at all about him and never was.

The auto scroller has been fouled up some how..... I will look at this asap.
Actually, I'm 99% sure the issue is because of my changing facing to match the manual.  The biker uses facing as it was previously used and ends up facing left when the mod is used on newer versions of OpenBOR.  I'm think I'm going to make the default back to the way it was since both this mod and BonusJZ's mods use those settings and include a flag for levels.txt or models.txt for mods that use facing the way the manual currently says it works so they can be easily converted.

If that is the case I'm trying it out right now to see if it makes a difference.

** Updated **

Yep that was the problem.....   So I think we should put it back since we now have a mod thats been released using it and update the manual as it was before.

fmap works slightly backwards to how modders imagine. However , there is actually a bug with it. I'll explain both..

fmap currently works by setting the fmap assigned in the attackers header. I assume that when it was implemented , it was assumed that all entity's fmaps would be the same. I.E everybody's fmap would be set to remap 5.

As long as this rule is followed, I believe there shouldn't be a problem.

The bug on the other hand seems to be that once an entity is unfrozen , either by getting hit or the freeze time expiring , then they do not change back to their previous map at all.

You might want to hold up on that. I think i've got it working correctly with my above method....I'm not sure how/why. give me 10 mins!

EDIT: Yes it's working fine for me. Put this down to user error/lack of information but fmap must be the same for every entity.

Also , projectiles with a freeze attack need a fmap setting in their header. As fmap effects the target , projectiles do not need a remap.

BB , I know you have trouble with slow internet speeds so , unless you are planning to release an update with new moves/script or whatever , I will be happy to fix the fmap errors and get it uploaded for you.....

I will only be happy if fmap is set like how it was. It works like that in ver2.0055 so why should it be changed?

It hasn't been changed. I thought I remembered something about the fmaps having to match so I gave it a shot. Just to make sure. I tested it to builds much farther back than that.
