Title: Maplevania
Post by: NickyP on August 25, 2009, 11:38:39 pm
2nd completed mod, woo! It's a Castlevania themed mod with sprites from Maplestory!

Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vz2mtmow2n (http://www.mediafire.com/?2vz2mtmow2n)
It's also uploaded here. So, grab it in the Downloads section under Completed Mods!

From the readme:
Spoiler
What happens when you cross Maplestory and Castlevania, then make a beat em up out of it? Well... this!

This was sort of an idea that put itself together over time. I love Castlevania games and always wanted to do something in BOR about it. I love Maplestory's sprites and always wanted to do something in BOR about it. It wasn't until one day that a friend of mine showed me a screenshot of Maplestory, one of the players was holding a whip as a weapon. It was then that the lightbulb in my head turned on, and Maplevania was born (thanks Rob)! It originally started out as a joke/parody mod, but as development went by I took it more seriously, and in my opinion it turned out pretty well!

~Gameplay~

If you've played my Final Fantasy I demo, you'll know exactly what to expect here, as this mods' gameplay style is an advanced version of that. Very simple gameplay.. just attack, jump, or both at the same time! (moving around is a given, duh)

~Controls~

This mod uses the Attack1 and Jump buttons. That's all!

PSP users: Simply use the eboot I have provided in .rar. Place MV.pak into PSP/Game/OpenBOR/Paks. If you still have MegaMan: The Power War on your PSP, go ahead and put MV.pak in that one instead, as (aside from the icons), it's the same thing.

~Characters~

There are 3 characters to choose from. Below is a list of them and a description:

-Ethan Belmont-
Every Castlevania game has to have one! Ethan is the Belmont this time, which means he uses a whip. Ethan does moderate damage, moves pretty quickly, and is the quickest melee attacker. You can never go wrong playing as him!

-Claus Moriarti-
Ethan's sworn brother. Claus uses a two-handed sword with one hand. Because of this, he does more damage than Ethan, and his attack also has longer reach. However, he also moves the slowest out of the three characters, attacks the slowest, and can't jump very high. Tricky to use at first, but dangerous when mastered.

-Amelia Delacroix-
Claus' fiancee. Amelia uses a pistol. Because the undead aren't really weak against bullets, she does the least amount of damage between the three. She isn't without her advantages though; Amelia is the fastest moving and attacking character of the three. And, because she's using a gun, she obviously has the best range as well. But, be careful! Because unlike Ethan and Claus, Amelia's attacks can only hit one enemy at a time. Truly a more technical character, but is by no means impossible to play as.

~OpenBOR Version~
I recommend you use version 3.2252 or higher. It should work fine on all later versions as well. PSP users just use the version I have provided in the .rar

~Tips~

-Just because it seems like Claus needs to hit enemies as much as Ethan does to kill them at first, it doesn't mean he's just as strong. Enemies that take 3 or 4 hits to kill with Ethan take only 2 or 3 with Claus. Not to mention, Claus can deal more single damage to bosses. However, for every 3 attacks Claus does, Ethan can do 4-5 because he's just faster.
-Similiar to the above, an enemy that takes Ethan 2 hits to kill will take Amelia 4 hits. Keep in mind however that Amelia is not only faster, but has unlimited range due to her pistol. Isn't strategy fun?
-If you ever come across an enemy that appears to be invincible, think again; you just aren't attacking them in the right spot.

Have fun, guys!  :cheers!:

EDIT: Oh, I forgot. Thanks a lot to BonusJZ for allowing me to use some sound effects from his Vampire Hunters mod!

Sweet, glad you liked!

Out of curiosity, who'd you use?

Post by: Kolbek on August 26, 2009, 01:52:44 am
Well...sorry bad with names, but the character with the sword seemed to have the strongest attacks. However, the girl character made the boss fights wayyy easy except for boss 5 or 4...whichever one multiplied itself.

btw, dracula was an awsome fight!

Funny you say that, actually.  When making Stage 4 I realized that Amelia makes boss fights incredibly easy. So, every boss after Stage 3 (aside from dracula) is specifically designed to be anti-Amelia!

Did you ever figure out the trick for boss 5, though? There's a reason why I said what I said in the Tips section of the readme...  :-X

This game was a fun and great game. Best boss was the Lizard and best char was the Gunner. But, the game was too easy with not so many levels, no unlockables, only 1 move etc. If I were to rate it I would give it a 8/10

Well, what can i say - its pretty fun, nice idea, nice chars, nice bosses, levels are not too long and not boring.
I really liked the Castlevania Judgment OST's, they really fit the scene, and a bit of humor in cutscenes is just cool and new - and thats really great. BUT, the only thing i didnt like is fighting system - all chars have only one poke, and thats all. It will be much cooler if they had at least one combo. And at least one special attack. Just poking everyone with one button is...not so fun,And some bosses can be killed with "Flawless Victory" with a certain char, for example level 3 boss (that green lizard boy) can be shooted to death by Amelia (girl-char), without any chance of doing something. Level 4 boss (Giant ice serpent) can be killed by Moriarty, because his attack doesnt hit him, if he is standing too close to him.

Overall the game is fun, it only needs combos, blood, and a little more complicated gameplay (just a little, not much). So its 4/5, nice game ;)

I really have no idea what the problem is. The PSP version I have bundled with it is the one I personally use, and it's never crashed like that for Maplevania. ???

Perhaps you should reinstall it?

just thought about it. If's it okay with NickyP.
for those of you who'd like to make their own playable characters for the maplevania mod. here's a site where you can literally create your own maplestory sprites. Literally. it works like a create mode in a wrestling game.
http://www.maplesim.com/ (http://www.maplesim.com/)
enjoy!!!
just remember that maplevania isn't set up like a typical mod. As with anything else, try to familiarize yourself with it's nuances, before you create a hot mess of the things that already work.

Eh, I don't really mind. If anything I'm flattered that you have such an interest in this mod.  :)

Right, don't let the cutesy graphics and the simple gameplay fool you; it actually took some clever tricks to get the game to play the way it does!

Also, maplesim is actually what I used to create Ethan and the rest. I love playing around with it here and there. Attached is me, maple-ized!

This game made me really LOL one or two times... like this one...

(http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/3640/pornmaple.jpg) (http://img43.imageshack.us/i/pornmaple.jpg/)

Ok let's try to be serious now...
I usually do not like "simple" mods, just hit and jump, jump & hit... i appreciated some BGM from Simphony of the night, the Dracula's dialogue and the overall graphics' output.

Also, the levels are really well planned; unlike other mods you will see enemies introduced gradually, each level has its new enemy to show and this adds variety and playability.

And that is really all about it, i mean, nothing else to say about it, this game is just one ride.

I bet it was specifically designed for psp, isn't it?

Not at all. I only include the PSP version of OpenBOR because it's the one I use the most.  :)

Simplicity can be good but there were little things that bugged me.  Regular enemies seemed sort of bland despite the fact that you did make the effort to add new enemies each level.  It's good that you maintained the Castlevania staple of taking damage when you touch enemies, however this sometimes caused problems with getting bounced between enemies without being able to recover.  This leads to my biggest frustration--the level 5 boss.  By far the hardest boss in the game.  I like that he requires you to hit a weak spot but since this causes him to create a spawn regardless it can be difficult to tell you're doing the right thing.  It's easy to get overwhelmed, doubled by the fact that he spawns a minion when you die.  It's possible to hit a point of no return where you don't have the breathing room to move around.  This seemed the most evident with Claus since he has such a low jump height.

Still, it's good to see more variety of visuals and gameplay in mods.
