Hi guys, im starting a new project.
game ideia is snes x-men + snes marvel war gems, + some custom stuffs.
im learning about openbor and create topic to show what im doing and get any help in that process.

i cant get complete stages in some place?

Now, are you trying to say you cant get the for example, Stage 1 completed? If so, have you declared in levels.txt after each stage Next? It should be something like this:

Man, nice work on this mod man. There are two things it will need though:
1. 4 Player mode(or just don't change it at all and let players switch it from the option menu)

2. Deadpool  ;D

do you have plans to make an original plot or follow some comic event?

This mod is shapeing up nicely i love the style the creation the colours are phenomenal
 are u planning to  add charceters like the flash and thor perhaps maybe beast  ghost rider flame from fantastic 4 any of those 3 will do  :cheers!: and good luck with this masterpeice of yours.

no ideia about story yet,
im just testing engine and having fun.
for now will do only 1 special, the 1 1 2 3 combo, jump attack and the FF+A ataque.
no run and no grab.
that can be improved later.

 It's okay not to have run & grab ability, mods are still fun without them as long you can keep balance right.

 About attack chain/combo, you can change how it works with atchain command. You can read manual for more info but for now try setting atchain 2 1 3 and see what happens ;). You can change it if you don't like.

 About special, I hope the super heroes will perform real special not just freespecial without bbox.

 Oh yes, what kind of enemies the super heroes will face?

about enemys so far i have:
- civillians infected with symbionte
- genosha soldiers
- sentinels
- street gangs
- i ripped 5 enemys from wild cats.
- maybe brood
- maybe something from sonic blast 2
and i have plans for more, like hidra, elektra ninjas, skrulls, morlooks...
but still looking for this bases.
i tink will try hidra with ninja turtles soldiers....

Sounds interesting. ;D Also the pic(s) you have there is pretty good with characters with good colors. ;) Looks very interesting. :) I played some Marvel games as a kid, along with my brother, our cousins, and friends. We played X-Men, and The Avengers (in general of Captain America).

 Nice work on new levels!

 Hmmm... about the lower right image? that's 2d stage I presume. Isn't there original background for that? The background you are using there is from Metal Slug 2/X. Dunno about you but it hurts my eyes seeing the background knowing it's smaller. You should rip real one or at least other background with same size.

Perhaps u should add a few backgrounds from marvel games like marvel superheroes vs street fighter and a few other types they have some preety hot back grounds for marvel games.  Anyways i must say your doing such a brilliant job with what u have come up with as time has moved on. And i cant wait to see what other progress u bring out for this masterpeice.  :cheers!:

actually i started the fisk tower stage, this bonebreaker was already ripped by some1?

Perhaps u should add a few backgrounds from marvel games like marvel superheroes vs street fighter and a few other types they have some preety hot back grounds for marvel games.  :
i will not use stuffs to marvel versus games, i dont want any mugen felling at this mod.

 Hm? Fisk is small? I prefer the original size, the one in the shot is too small IMO.

 Yes, their death animation needs more explosions.
 Oh speaking of Sentinel, I just noticed that the big Sentinel in the 2D level needs setlayer . This guy is always behind players and other enemies so setlayer 1 is enough for him.

Simple gameplay, im tryng here make something like Snes War Gems

3 Buttons:
A - Attack
S - Block
D - Jump

- No weapons, no veichels, no run.
- Attack make the basic 1 1 2 3 combo.
- Jump + A, Air Attack
- U, U + A, Knockaback Attack, same attack 3 from combo.
- F, F + A, Dash Attack
- D, F + A, Special
- Grab and Throw just to big guys (Hulk, Juggz, Venom and Sentry)

Game start with 5 playable chars, each stage new ones come and you can select char between each stage. after beat game hard mode will be unlocked, at hard mode all chars are unlocked.

For example, he first frankensprited Sagat's body with Captain America's legs. Anyways, Kinjite30g, it's not scratch sprite. That's spriting. Scratch-spriting means you start to sprite from scratch. Look at ahrimanes's characters (Electra, Orchid, and Kain) and watch his videos. They're all made from scratch by him.

it will depend of how much freespecials, different enemies the game have and how is the gameplayand the secrets to keep players enjoying.
if the player have thousand ways to kill enemies the players will enjoy this for much more time.

personally i prefer short experiences  than longer ones, but i have sure many people here love long experiences

i love the feeling of "i wish to play more" and this let people hungry for a sequel

my marvel game i think it will should have more and less 50 minutes to beat the whole game. but it is rare... most of games take much more time than im planning to mine


Also i remember a book that i read long time ago in 2007 called "A Theory of Fun for Game Design."
Its writed by Raph Koster.
If you have a game design collection books i recomend this one, it is sometimes much phylosopical but sometimes is cool make people addicted to your game :)

I prefer this way for any beat'em up since most beat'em ups last for a hour or more and i also like the nostalgic of playing again since it have replay value.

This is fine for me since the sheer amount of characters makes up the replay value and everyone has thier favorite like me.

stages and playables almost done, but i dont know, im new at this engine and i cant estimate how much time will spend at some things.
to do:
- add different hit sparks
- convert and add musics
- add sounds to chars
- add enemys/itens to 2, 3 and 4 player mode.
- do storyboards, load screens, how to play, intro, endings...
- make a unlocked levels: trainning room and hard mode.

maybe more....

IMO you dont have to add story,i know that its frustrating to add story and it can even delay mod a couple of weeks even if its finished ,in cadillacs and dinosaurs i actually dislike the story and i like to play the game cause i like capcom mechanics ,battletoads arcade dont have storyline at all,you play the game and beat everything in front of you.This is not adventure game so its not that important factor here.
Dont forget to change fonts and lifebars.

 2nd this. Since this is beat'mup, players will have to kill every enemy like it or not and this is repeated in every level/stage. This repetition will become boredom if there are not many ways to kill enemies.
 Oh yes, dunno about others, I prefer to kill enemies as quick as possible so I always try to perform deadliest combos or moves. Because of this, I prefer to give enemies enough HP  so they can be killed with one or two of that combos or moves.

 Speaking of killing enemies quick, I just remembered that doing so also allows me to enjoy the level more by travelling. This is personal preference though but let me ask you something,  From these 2 level design:
1. Staying in one place and kill enemies until level over. I'm not talking about elevator level or pseudo travelling level here.
2. Kill some enemies then walk couple steps and repeat the cycle again until the level reaches end.
 Which one do you prefer if both plays in same time?

 Another thing to make long mods not boring is by giving bonus stages or alternate stages which require players to do something else than killing every enemy on screen. For instance, you can make stage which can only be ended by reaching the end or by reaching door or something like it.

 Those are just couple suggestions to make long mods not boring.

try do something different of the rest of the game on the 3rd stage and in the stage 6 to break the rotine


since i know you are a sprite king you be able to do some riding bikes shoting enemies stage (using that flying x men enemies bikes would be cool, or using captain america and avengers ships and jetpacks too
or a underwater stage too with masks and jetpacks from captain america and the avengers

they all have almost 3 or 4 sprite at max and most of those are the fire beam animations, or tire animations i have sure you can do it easily with your skills :)

underwater is a cool ideia, its only 3 or 4 sprites, but to this mod is 3 or 4 x 22, a lot of sprite and code to do, but will be cool to let game be less boring, i will really tink about that, anyway first tingh about a underwater level should be look for a base to namor.....

you can limit for that underwater stage only some heroes...


in my mod i will make a underwater stage that only namor will be selected but this stage only will be avaliable in dingoo and psp version of my mod  ( because they will be a single player only version for those systems)


and in the pc and videogames version this stage will be replaced by a  flying to the space shooting stage where only characters that can fly will can be choosed
example: in this flying stage only thor, namor, ironman and quasar will be selectable in my mod
and in the next stage the player will be able to choose any character he wants once again...

 I just remembered one important thing related to long and not boring aspect. It's the boss fight! One thing that makes me not bored while playing long beat'm ups is challenging boss fights which requires different strategy to win (if you aim for survival that is).

 So if you don't have multiple ways to kill enemies, give challenging boss fight which requires player to think up strategy instead of just combo or worse, spamming specials.

 Splatter House 3, Streets of Rage 1 & 2 is fun and not boring games because of boss fights.

Dont give enemies too much life especially in first stage,one chain combo should kill enemies from first stages,first experience is important so dont force people to make combo 3 times in first stage.LAter you can increas life but first stages need to be fast and not annoying where you have to wait for enemy to get up again and again.

secret wars was because first ideia was use beyonder, now it is a new story, no reference to any comics story, so a name to remember marvel ultimate alliance shoulde be better.... and heroes use classic costumes, thats why im looking for a new name.

With every new screen, my interest in it increases.
That roster looks amazing (though I'm wondering if you'll run into memory issues. Hope this was just a PSP restriction. Sorry about that, PSP users ;) )

 From the video there are couple stuffs you could update:
1. Every character needs landframe in his/her fall animation so they don't play fallen sprite in air
2. It's nice for you to show new available characters but I think you need to give text to notify players about it, something like: New Characters! or .... has joined the team!
3. And related to #2, you need to change font's color for some superhero's names. Punisher is easy to read but Juggernaut is hard to read due to dark background.
4. Enemy needs better AI. aimove chase or aimove chasez is enough to change the flow of game ;). And it's also good way to increase difficulty without spawning too many enemies onscreen.
5. Since you have various characters, you might want to use defense command. For instance, defense normal 1 20 makes character endures nonknockdown attack whose damage is 20 or less. Try this to Hulk, Doctor Doom, Iron Man, Warmachine and Juggernaut ;).

 Yeah, I keep forgetting to make tutorial for landframe. Anyways, here's how to do it:

Before landing, Cyclops will play 2nd frame for 5 seconds. Any delay will do just make it long and don't worry about being too long cause once landed, the played frame will immediately changed to 3rd or last one in this case. landframe 2 sets Cyclops to land on 3rd frame (1st frame is 0 BTW).

 I forgot to suggest these:
 6. You might want to check Donovan's jumpattack range. He attacks from wrong range. I think it's supposed to be close range attack.
 7. Enemies would look cooler if they enter screen with SPAWN animation. It could be simply walk or jump to teleports ;).

i've done a quick test,and the demo works on psp.the gameplay is simple and good,perphaps more special effect with special moves could be better and perphaps you can add a gameplay with counter attack(when ennemy attack,block button,direction,attack) and the char do a special grab.it's only suggestion.your game is good!thank you for your mod!;)

i like run at beatnup games but my sprite base games dont have run, so will not add it, will be a pain try sprite that to all chars.

counter attack must be done with script? i cant remember anything about that at manual.

i want a desesperation attack to be done when char are at pain anim, but special anim dont works if block are seted to game.... im doing something wrong? have anothr way to make a freespecial or attack to be done also at pain anim?

I changed some stuff ,like delays ,sounds ,power in chain attacks + health in enemies  so chain combo kills them ,added landframe in fall anim of enemies(you can add it to players too),changed walking speed+jumping speed of enemies and cptain america a bit and gravity in stage,your version was too slow IMO also sounds were from original bor, so you can check now if its better,i changed only captain america and enemies.I added script to his freespecial anim so you can use it instead of move command.You can see whats changed cause you remember your mod and you can do the same modification to other characters,it plays a bit more dynamic but it isnt exactly like i would want to.Or just ask guys here which version they prefere,if game is slow then it becomes boring much faster,so i made gameplay a bit faster.changed also chain attacks so its 1 2 3 not 1 1 2 3.

just change the name capame~1.txt to CapAmerica.txt and do the same  to spiderman & Wolverine, and in the wolvie~2, change it for wolverinea in chars folder, or put capame~1 and the others in models.

no caso do meu mod o spiderman atira webshots que paralizam os inimigos por alguns segundos  eh o mesmo caso da magia do sub zero por exemplo no mugen, nao  causa dano mas paraliza por alguns segundos

e no momento que o inimigo eh congelado no caso do seu mod como acho que nao tem animacoes de freeze vc poderia colocar as de um casulo de teia no lugar. caso vc use animacoes de congelamento no seu mod vc pode fazer isso via script e ter os dois tipos de animacoes para paralizar inimigos.

quanto ao run animation no meu mod alguns chars que nao possuiam animacoes de correr eu coloquei a mesma animacao de walk por?m com uma velocidade maior de animacao e speed e ficou legal  para o game play

se precisar de ajudas mais detalhadas eu altero no seu mod e te mando para vc testar e ver como foi feito

 Agree with this but furthermore you have to change your packer zvitor. You should use borpak which is included with openbor you download from daily snapshot. This borpak won't cut long names like these.

 I've just got the demo today. Give me time to play and I'll give you my review later :).

my version was packed with packer not with borpak thats why it hangs on long names,i would prefere if people stopped using long names,nobody sees filenames anyway when playing,my uploaded version its no different in size ,i added menu.txt only.
I switched to borpak yesterday tho.HAd problems with it not pcking all files.

i downloaded the pak and tested on openbor psp  VERSION 3288,3317 and dont work on it,3192 works but shut down with wolverine gameplay ..
i did get to play with captain america and ironman

in the BWWD PAK version, i change the names to the txts and, Well, it works for me, but my built is so old, i guess is from 2009 - 2010, and as it works so well for my PSP phatty I didn't change it to newest versions, only one thing, the version I had don't support the "Offscreenkill" stuff, when an entity has:
health 100
offscreenkill 25
in the txt for example, the mod don't works, I only remove the line offscreenkill line and it works perfect.

@BWWD Everybody can name the txt as they want, 'cuz finally, is their mod, so I don't think it should be a rule, but if you wanna edit a mod, check what's not good for you, and rename the parts that don't work with your software or the files that give you troubles, thats were the problems resides.

 I have done playing this mod, days ago actually. At 1st everything looks okay but after unpacking the mod and observe the contents, there are couple things to fix.

1. The 1st cutscene takes too long IMO. Worse, it can't be skipped.
2. You use video 1 in your video.txt which is for widescreen but this mod is not widescreen.
3. You set 32bit colourdepth but you also use remap command.
 Don't use remap command but instead use alternatepal and remake all remaps to suit this colourdepth
4. com command is declared in respective FREESPECIAL. It should be declared in header instead.

 I agree with bWWd about chain combo. You have lots of heroes in this mod, give each them his/her won chain combo. Don't hesitate to even give single attack.

 There's something I don't understand about the stats though. In howtoplay, heroes with 4bar jump stat can control jump while 3bar jump stat can perform JUMPATTACK2. The question is how about heroes with 5bar jump stat? should he/she be able to perform both abilities?

 Anyways, in my fixed version, I give keyscript for Hulk and Ironman to allow them to move while jumping. Before you said it, jumpmove can't allow characters to move from static jump but this keyscript fixes it.

 I'll upload this later cause I'm busy ATM. Oh the fixed version only contains Hulk as hero though ;).

 I don't know. Never use it before and according to Damon Caskey, that animation lives up to its name. It CANT be played.

 I forgot to post the changes so here they are:

General:
- Every character in there has FALL animation fixed

Hulk:
- Hulk's attacks has hitpause now
- Hulk can turn around while blocking
- Hulk can move while jumping
- Hulk can perform JUMPATTACK2 now and he landed with a quake
- Hulk's earthquake works right. Previously it can't hit anything behind him
- Hulk's F F A is smoother
- Hulk's throw is changed to GRABBACKWARD allowing throw effect to be controlled easier
- Hulk endures weak attack

Enemies:
- Hydra2 uses script for shooting (to tell the truth, there's nothing wrong with it aside of bullet being too high but since you use offset trick to spawn bullet in right place, I decided to use script which allows you to define the starting location of the bullet easier)
- New enemy named Hydra2S. These guys simply walk in, shoot, then leaves
- Whirlwind gives more challenge now since he can perform 3D attack. It's blockable though
- Red Hulk is updated. He can perform 3D attack and endures weak attacks.

 Well, I prefer more palettes, 5 per character IMO.

 As for your problems, I can't figure out why blocking is broken with weapon model. I've tried everything but it still failed. The only solution left is the use of defense. With this, it will work like block EXCEPT that heroes also block attacks from behind. FYI, default block doesn't block from behind. Haven't tried this yet though.

 For the holdblock issue, I haven't used it before so don't know if it's like this or not but if you don't want players to cancel block into jump or attack, I know the solution and it has been tested with Wolverine. Want to see it? :)

hey great job zvitor.I played the demo and really liked the gameplay is good the backround of ninja warriors that you used in the first stage was also very cool one of the things I like most in your mod is the fact that he is oldschool style.as the songs are too good .would be nice to put some music of mf doom in mod.Mf doom has excellent instrumental beat.I think maybe a character that would look cool in your mod would luke cage.the problem would be finding a good character to edit and create luke cage.

I guess the problem is again the wolverine.txt / wolverina.txt, you should try rename those txts with a shorter name alucard2009, and update the models and stuff that uses that names, you could use "wolvie" and "claws" to avoid that kind of errors, or change the packer you are using to borpak, I'm sure the problem is that, 'cuz the trouble is when you use the claws right?

 Played the 2nd demo and this one has MP bar. So far I can't find real use of it aside of D D Attack freespecial which is the only attack which costs MP.

 Nice work so far! My suggestion is that you should spawn enemies between waits so it's not so empty.

 Sentry jumping out (after breaking the cell) by passing through cell bars look odd. Maybe he should stand by the door.

 Anyways, overall it's good! After seeing the video, I understand why there are robots with guns as NPC.

I've tried the demo, looks good, but the gameplay is a bit generic, it needs something like the Super Fightin Spirit mod, not something so extreme, but with a bit of contundence, also the hud and the general menu needs a revamp, I don't know if you had plans to do it. Playable and enemy roster is perfect, all my favourites are in, also, amazing sprite edits. Good work!

Yup, you put your .pak archive in a RAR or ZIP then click on Upload file, fills some subjects there such as category, description and stuff, and then just had to copy the link and put it here or in a new thread

It's a really cool mod, kinda oldschool in a way but really fun and it has some really good atmosphere.

A lot of the characters were pretty cool but I thought Iron man is just to good compared to everyone else I also liked beast a lot.

I thought Cyclops Nick and Gambit were lacking a bit, still kinda fun to play but a lot characters just need a few more moves or abilities, some of them just don't seem super enough?

Just a few more moves or specials, special abilities, grapples, air juggles etc if possible would make the game even better.

My fav parts:

1: the room with the crapload of Sentinels.

2: The impressive Megamind Sentinel bosses.

@ zvitor, It's funny cause' I was just thinking and saying in another part of the thread here in the W.I.P. section of the forums, that I have both Marvel Ultimate Alliance games 1 & 2.

Then someone comes along with a great idea to create a Marvel related game with all of my favorite Marvel heroes.

I love how you took all the best characters and put as many as you could fit into this game.
I watched the trailer you had up on YouTube and I was completely amazed !

Excellent work, and I can't wait to play this one !
Will you hopefully be making this into a full game at some point ?

I saw that you got interested in Invisible Woman (http://forum.paodemugen.com.br/index.php?showtopic=10567&view=findpost&p=118982), Eliza from Final Fight 2 (http://scrollboss.illmosis.net/sprites/ffight2_eliza_stand.png) has a hiarcut that you can use as base. Many of these old Capcom brawlers are great source for your project (you already know that, just saying for emphasize), here's an option for Luke Cage (http://i.imgur.com/KNNni.png).

I recomend you to change the effects and tweaking the gameplay (look Pierwolf's mods), it looks like original BOR with a Marvel skin.

I have some sources for the chain, Andore and Drake from Final Fight 3 (http://i.imgur.com/avIZ5.png). I've already ripped Andore (I'll post soon in Sprites sites) but his chains don't move. Drake is the only boss unripped, I want to rip it, tell me if you are interested and I can hurry.

 There is one enemy from WILDCATS (SNES) which wield chain as weapon. Dunno if it's available on net yet but borboy has ripped this guy before and posted the image somewhere in his Hot Blood thread (I think).

 Another source is Vendetta (arcade), one enemy wield chain and players can take his dropped chain and use it as weapon too.

The lifebars are great! I suggest more contrasted colors or a bigger border, the yellow colors in wolverine lifebars are a little hard to see.

 Hmm.... a good way to learn scripts is to learn from existing ones. You can download an animationscript I shared in becker's TMNT thread. It contains basic functions which can make modding easier ;).

 As for better AIs, there are many ways. I can share 3 ways for start, i.e random attack, more reaction and 3D target.
- Random attack gives enemy random attack which makes him/her/it harder to predict
- Reaction means enemy can react more on certain conditions. For example, some boss can be in immune state forever until heroes move away from him/her ;)
- 3D target allows enemy to attack player from different z coordinate. Do you know fat chargers from Capcom beat'm ups? this script can make something like them.

The whole video I was like where's Ghost Rider and Venom!? Then they kick *** at the end together!l I still cannot wait for this game to be finished.

 Nice additions!

 The flying stage looks cool but I believe you should give the enemies proper AI. Planes (scout) for instance, should not move and turn like regular enemies like this. There are some possible AIs you could give to them, here are 2 of them:
1. Striker
 Planes only fly straight either left or right and they shoot while flying. They won't turn no matter what happen. You could use subtype arrow for this. Bike subtype also works but make sure you set proper speed so players could shoot them ;)
2. Shooter
 Planes come from behind and uses aimove chasez and avoidx. They will snipe players from behind and shoot. Good AI and recommended but only have these if players can shoot backward.
 Another possibility is they come from front showing their back/tail to players and shoot backwards instead. Another good AI but only look good if planes can really shoot back

 I can see NPC helper at 0:43. I think it would be best if he has SPAWN animation.

im working on npc spawn, there is a easy way (non script) to make one enemy drop a item, and that item spawn the npc?

 Why don't the enemy drops NPC directly? :)
 The flaw of this is NPC won't be linked to any player IOW they won't follow player.

My ideia is do something like diablo necrommancer, you kill a enemy, then he drop a item, i make his death anym empity and item will be his corpes, then if i pick it, it become one npc to fight at my side.

You could just make a new version of the char and set it up as a weapon type, and in it's GET animation spawn the NPC.  You could also include something in the get anim to switch it back to the default model straight after. (weapon switch command or maybe someone has some quick script way) The weapon pickup would be the item dropped by enemy.

Hey Z man question I'm a guy who likes challenges are the enemies going to be harder and will they have more moves then one also the planes look great but when they die it fades will u see the planes are destroyed?

1) im not poting notghint because all my recent work atm is redoing and testing stages, so i incressed aggression of some enemys, but just fews minnions have more then one attack.

2) plane was place hold, im redoing this stages too.

Now THAT'S very outstanding work you got there, zvitor!!!!!! :thumbs_up: I love to see more of Marvel chars but I really understand spriting is always a lot of work to take time with. I think 30 chars might be enough for the project (I guess). Like Hanzo, looking forward to your MARVEL-ous and awesome project.

editei na sheet antes de cortar, pra tirar as cores repetidas, tipo um amarelo que ficava na pele e no uniforme do wolverine, aí depois fica fácil paletar.

Hey Mr Awesome I've started playing your demo again just to get that feeling again..simply love each character. Although cyclops is still my favorite i do have one request, cant you make it so that his special hits all (U, D, L, R) around him. this would make him a lot better. he should be best in range anyway

- choise one team and play game again only with this chars
- change char between each level
- more help from.... helpers, and this ones are relative to your team.
- 3 exclusives chars
- somes new helpers too.
- diferent storyboards from story mode, is same story but with a different perpective.

so we can expect an updated game soon ? new characters are always good (shame that guy who said he would make deadpool never finished him), also if you could fix a few issues i have thatd  be great

1) The bug where sometimes when you die in a level only starter characters can be selected to continue and you have to wait for next level to change to the other characters that should be unlocked.

2) Continues- can we please have more ?

3) Kingpin level when travelling on elevator the groups of blonde haired enemies spam punches non stop so you can get in a rhythm of being hit and cant escape sometimes.

This happens in a *lot* of mods (for me, anyway).

Maybe someone more OpenBor savvy can clarify if it's something with the engine or a missing command line or whatever....   :blushing:

(Oh, I had encountered a "bug" of sorts in this and other games as well (Knights and Dragons for ex): when you try to change the keyboard, some keys would acquire "double duty", like when I pressed down on P1 (which I remaped to S), it would also input P2 Start (even though P2 Start was already mapped to another key). Anyway, I got this fixed by paxploding and removing the disabling of Attack234 buttons. Don't know why it worked, but it did...)
