Title: Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Warduke
Post by: Count Monte on April 07, 2011, 03:41:15 pm
Here's my completed mod DUNGEONS & DRAGONS:  THE RISE OF WARDUKE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qfKx1gkzmE# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qfKx1gkzmE#)

It's a 2 player game meant to be a sequel to Capcom's Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara that also incorporates the characters from the LJN D&D toyline and cartoon (Warduke, Strongheart, Elkhorn, Ringlerun, Kelek and Mercion).

I used Pierwolf's KNIGHTS & DRAGONS as a template, so I owe many, many thanks and credit to him for giving me permission to use monsters, coding, spells etc from his game.

You can play as Tel'Erond, the Fighter-Mage Elf.  He's got magic spells LIGHTNING BOLT, FIREBALL, MAGIC MISSILE, ICE STORM as well as a dash attack.

You can also play as Strongheart, the Paladin.  He's got a CURE WOUNDS magic spell, can toss flaming oil, or summon his dwarf ally, and a dash attack as well.

There is a secret level with an alternate ending.

There are a couple of bugs/glitches I'm aware of that I can't solve.
1)  When fighting Warduke, if he does his jump attack and lands near the left edge of the screen it crashes.
2)  Strongheart flying on his dragon has his head randomly disappear (I think both are drawmethod bugs)
3) NPC helper's sometimes trap enemies off-screen and you can't hit them.

You can download the game here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?x5xf4c60491tvd6 (http://www.mediafire.com/?x5xf4c60491tvd6)

I'll also upload the pak.

I don't know scripting, and if anyone can help fix the bugs, or wants to add/improve things to the game, I'd love the help.  I'm happy to share credit, I just wanted to get this game out there.  It's not as good as what Bonus JZ would have made, but it's the best I could do!

Thanks!

I gave you a special thanks in the end credits Bloodbane, for your great advice and testing.  I tried to fix all the things you suggested.  Some of them were beyond my knowledge, but I was able to address most of them!

Good and fun pak but have lot of bugs:

- The deathly bag of gold. I was be killed TWO TIMES by a gold bag. When you get it the bag made damage.
- The black dragon. Only a 1 hit point???? Come on...
- No frozen orcs animation?
- When I loose every credit at my first play and I started the second I dont have credits!!!! I must delete the save?
- Sometimes the Lighting Bolt disapear and you can not hit two times.
- The ice storm dont make damage?
- You must choose the character two times into the select screen.

And more

- I try to save the mage millions of times. You get some extra if you kill the warlord and the mage is alive?
- The first scene is simply:

Hey Expio, thanks for the feedback.

Did you download the pak or the whole game from the mediafire link?  Some of the bugs you encountered may exist on a different version of OpenBOR.  The black dragon has full health on the game I tested.  I did put the pak on my Wiz and noticed that it died in one hit on that version.  I'm not sure why it would vary between versions?  The same thing with the gold issue you had.

The reason you have to choose the character 2 times is because there's an unlockable character if you finish the game.  I tried making it so that you don't have to select twice, but then when you're playing the game and you die, it won't let you choose a different character.  So I decided it's better to have to select twice the first time.

I wasn't able to fix the lightning bolt disappearing, if anyone knows how to do that, I'd love some advice!

There's no bonus for saving the mage:)  He's supposed to die.

I downloaded the pak because I play the openbor games only in my phat psp.

Wich version of openbor you use?

When you finish the game you unlock Deimos? I can choose him when I continue with a credit into the normal game  :wow!:

I used OpenBoR v3.0 Build 2123

Yeah, when you finish it unlocks Deimos.  But if you can get him to work now, then that should make it easier:)  His magic spells don't require as much mana as Tel'Erond's.

Hey count did you use annallyst's method of reducing the size of a mod by using ogg sound files? Makes a huge difference.

I got to 75meg before my download cut out, meh. And it wouldn't restart either, oh well guess I'll have to try again sometime. My bandwith is just too low and the moment :...( game looks pretty cool.

at first sight I thought of the mod as being a remake of Pierwolf's mod, the same music, etc...

I'm glad to see those good sprites like the ones fro  strongheart and warduke!!

but on my first gameplay I had a glitch: the openbor window just freeze, with fx continuing to sound, but when pressing button an strange noise took place, look the image attached. What I did was press start (i hear it, didn't see the pause menu) and put end, then just closes openbor, without error message on log file:
Spoiler
(http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh109/Vladphemer/Dibujo-1.png)

that using the openbor version provided with the mod.

anyways I love the orcs sprites!! but also found some bugs:

-look the position of the hud of strongheart and warduke... it's a mess!! also they have different huds and looks inconsistent! .also look how strongheart walks on the fire:

-the attack chain of striongheart: the first attacks are with the sword, the last one of the chain is a kick, but have minor range.. so I hit the enemy with the sword and when kickin I miss, making the enemy able to hit me back...

so far I'm only on the mountain path, but I liked so will continue playing!!

the intro scene was great!!

i can't get past the level with the orcs, at the beginning of the game. After the first wave of enemies and the two goblin cars, after the screen tells me to go on, nothing happens. I move to the right, and the simple theres no more eneies coming at me.

Hey Kal, what version of OpenBOR are you using?  Trying a different build might solve the problem.  I know it runs well on OpenBoR v3.0 Build 2123

Try this link. http://www.mediafire.com/?x5xf4c60491tvd6 (http://www.mediafire.com/?x5xf4c60491tvd6)

It may not be the latest version, but you should be able to get that OpenBOR version you need.

Since my account went poof and I had to start a new one, I can't change the title of this thread.  I've updated the mod so that it runs on the latest build.  I did have to redo the character icons, for some reason the palettes didn't work on the new build.  There might still be some issues in that area.  The good news is that the new build solved some of the bugs in the old version -- Warduke no longer causes the game to crash when he does his lightning attack on the left side of the screen.  The drawmethod issue causing Strongheart's head to disappear while riding his dragon also was magically fixed.

For anyone who couldn't get the past version to work, you can download the updated one here:
http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=85 (http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=85)

Playing Pierwolf's Knights & Dragons: Endless Quest has inspired me to continue work on this.  Since I'm so passionate about the D&D toys made my LJN in the 80s, I'm working on a bonus level based on the Fortress of Fangs playset.

Here's a video of the Fortress of Fangs level for the mod:

Your video really shines. My only thought would be to illustrate the teeth better. I did not what they were until I saw the set.
Title: Re: New mod: Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Warduke
Post by: Count Monte on February 24, 2012, 04:03:52 am
Thanks Mrgrill!
Yes, I still have some work to do on the Fortress sprite.  It's a huge sprite, I still need to clean up some pixels, add more rocks around the top perimeter, and the teeth need some work for sure.
I was working on it and really wanted to start adding some gameplay elements, and ended up doing quite a bit of work - adding traps etc.
It's also tricky because of the platforms and gravity.  Overall though, I'm having fun seeing the toys come to life:)

You get to think that the fortress was the same type of retro graphics that the rest of the game?
Because on the video, I know it's a demo, but it is too modern and too sharp: (
Maybe if you give me the PSD of this level i can help you ?

darknoir,

Sure I can send you the file -- it's either a gif or PNG.  I had to make it from scratch, using textures from other games.  For example, for the green rocks I used Gen-An's cave from Samurai Shodown.  PM me your email and I'll send you the pic.

Hi

So sad to don't have the time to help you for the moment :(
But like i say you before, i wish you will not use the castle like that :(

It is a toy, it is small ...
In reality it is bigger like all the castles ...

The best way is to shop your little castle in the background of the castle ... when the players are in the before before level. and show it very little.
In the before level, show it in the background at the end, with a bigger size ... and at the end they enter in by a big door.
And when they are in the castle, make it like all the CAPCOM Dungeons & Dragons games ... but change a little the background to show some time the lava, the treasure, the prison, ... after we take a door with stairs ... and at the first floor, this must have a room with many traps like in the game before the corridor with torches and finally the room of the throne where you fight the final wizard !

I think it will be better to make the game realistic ... and beautiful :D

I'm agreed, its suppossed to be a big castle, not that little house. On a toy scale it's ok and it works, but at a stage it's a little strange...
Think how will you feel seeing Catsle Greyskull on that same scale in a game.

Anyways keep the excellent work, and hope to try this!!  :cheers!:
