erifpiR: there's no need to quote the whole post is the post is right before yours.

Skull Kingz: Great work! I'm watching the video now.

Just finished it and it's interesting to compare it to Skull Kings Remake.  While the protagonists here solve things with fists and guns, trying to find answers about his missing girlfriend is more likable than just going around beating faces.  However, while the story hook might be better, the gameplay isn't as strong.  Skull Kings simply had more options for combos and such.  Also, both the gun and the special seem too good since there's no drawbacks (ammo, mp, burning health).  Still, as I said with Skull Kings it's good to see more things that aren't the hundredth remake of Streets of Rage/Final Fight and you do some cool things with lighting to show level progression.

I'll admit, Overload has a way more in-depth story than Skull Kingz. I'll choose this story any day, and plus I have a cartoon to follow up on the characters and story.

As for the gameplay, I kept it super limited because I was aiming for a classic old school arcade kind of game. I don't know if it feels that way, but I played old games like Final Fight to hype myself up. I always felt like I was "cheap" when I played Skull Kingz. I would do one cancel after another, followed by a special, into a Breaker special. I just felt impossible... But with Overload, I can die if I don't time things correctly.

I'm glad you like my original (sprite edited) games. I hand drew all of the scenes too. lol, but I know I asked you this with Skull Kingz, but out of 10, what would you rate this game?
 ;)

Story: 8 - He waited a year? Does she regularly go on long vacations?  It's a simple story but the presentation and pacing sell it.  Seems worthy of a sequel/followup.  However, "Overload" didn't seem to be elaborated on much.
Controls: 8 - Keeping it limited on purpose isn't a bad thing.  It's just that it felt like...well, why would I even bother punching when I can shoot?  It seems like ammo would balance things out yet keep things simple.  Also, restricting ammo would allow you to actually increase the damage of the shots.  Weird hit detection on throw finishers as well.  Part of me feels I should bump this up since outside of the throw finishers there weren't any major problems though I haven't touched the mod since my last post so my memory is rusty.
Gameplay: 7 - Sorta goes hand in hand with the controls.  It shares some of the same flaws as Skull Kingz Remake in that there's not a ton of variance in enemies.  Might be somewhat forgivable here due to the length but it runs into the problem of the playable characters being similar.  There was some overlap in SKR but here you only have 2 playable characters.
Sound: 9 - While not blown away, all the sound is appropriate and works well.
Visuals: 9 - A tough call.  I think you over shaded/smoothed the sprites which doesn't look as good as it could.  However, this sort of gets weighted up by being massively sprite edited and the whole presentation feels like its own original world which also extends to the UI.
Overall: 8 - Not an average.  An enjoyable mod though the simplicity is debatable whether it hurts or helps.  Seems like it could stand to have a small bit "more" to the gameplay.

I'd also suggest you join in on the Enemies, Difficulty, and Design (http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php/topic,6313.0.html) discussion thread

Why not place the review in the review section?

Because it's 4 in the morning and the common sense isn't working. :( Bear with me.

Lol  ;)

I was actually in the review section when you posted that review ( in the non review section  ;) ).

I gotta say that reviews are a usefull source to see what others look for and sometimes you get to learn a thing or two.

Ah, yeah.  "Standard" reviews are somewhat uncommon for me.  I prefer discussions back and forth, especially if a mod is on pretty much a first public pass.  Though I guess they do different things since a critique is good for the modder (and any lurkers...) while I review is meant for the players.

I guess I'll wait till the morning to copy over Skull Kings since I'm really dozing off.

Story -this is more of a back story, that's why I never really explain "Overload" like that... but I know I did mention it a few times in the game. & the story is more of a follow up to the cartoon.  :-[

Overall 8: I'm a little shocked I'll admit. As I said in Skull Kingz, I was expecting a 6 or 7. "If" I decide to pick this project back up someday for a sequel, I'll probably get into things like scripting and other stuff to improve my modding skills.

Thanks Z'. You're helping me as a creator. :)
