TMNT
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:52:54 am »
So I finally decided to start my own topic, since I've been slacking a lot lately. I changed the screen resolution to 640x480 because I wanted the characters to have more space to move around without sacrificing graphic details, I'm actually using the same sprites, only the background I had to edit to get rid of the annoying black bars on the bottom and top of the screen. The reason I started this topic was not only to show my progress, but I realize that I need motivation, depending on how people react to it, it will make me wanna work on my mod. I noticed that a few friends that I showed this to were actually very impressed, and that made me wanna work on the game, so I hope people like it. Ok, enough with this boring explanation about the reasons behind my post.

I'll upload the first cutscene and then show a few screenshots:

For those who have seen the first cutscene, the first stage (first screenshot) is actually the turtles' house, they have to work their way out and find Master Splinter without being noticed by the foot soldiers, it is my intention to have a cutscene after every stage I already have a few ideas but it is a lot of work, since the cutscenes are actually hand-drawn and then scanned into my computer, that being said it is also a lot of fun once you see the results of your hard work, and also satisfying.

very good work, but I think you should keep 320x240, if you want more room to move, do as the original Double Dragon, the screen moves in accordance with the movement of the character ...

Thanks a lot kmilloz, but I like this screen resolution, it allows me to have a lot of details in the background, which I know will not affect the gameplay, but I'm just like a "detail freak" or something. Also, if you look a the HUD, it only takes about a quarter of he space in the top on the screen, so hopefully (if I'm able to), I can have 4 players and still enough space, but I do appreciate your advice

Thanks a lot mtrain! it is a lot of work, I'm pretty sure you can appreciate that since what you're doing with your Street of Rage MOD is too. The sprites are actually made with photoshop and a pen tablet (at least I think that's the name for it), it almost feel like you're holding a real pen, it becomes very natural once you're used to it, but making 3D models like you do, that's a whole other level.

 Dark! I believe that's your style :).

Anyways, nice work! It's surely tough to make sprites yourself+ working on mod.
And I agree with you about resolution. I remember when you showed your work years ago (forgot when) with low resolution, the screen is full sprites giving cramped fighting area :P. Now, with higher resolution, it's perfect. Wide fighting area is important.

 Good luck with mod!

played a demo of this from somewhere ages ago, love the art especially the foot soldiers cos they remind me of the toys for some reason. art style looks very dark- maybe make it like the original comics in the sense of adult orientated. add lots of blood and corpses etc
My current project: Simpsons treehouse of horror
My very first mod: Evil dead 2 redux

Thanks a lot guys. DARK is definitely my style, I remember that cartoon from the 80s, as much as I love it I always thought that characters like a Rhino or a Boar were not supposed to be funny, and I always knew the original TMNT comic book was pretty dark, but I didn't realize how different that cartoon was from the original comic book until I was already working on this MOD unfortunately (so much for being true to the original TMNT). Anyway, another reason why the screenshots look so dark is because I have transparency object that follow the camera and that is actually bigger than the screen resolution so it covers the whole screen, affecting every object in the room. The first screenshot is in the sewer, therefore the is less lighting than if you were outside, the second screenshot is "outside", but it's only like 4 am or 5 am, so it's still pretty dark (for those who saw the cutscene, the story takes place in the middle of the night), on the third screenshot it's dawn (I still gotta work on the lighting in the sky) but notice how the third screenshot is not as dark as the other two. Oh! and you're right about the Foot Soldiers, I still have the action figures and I used them as a reference...

So I was working on my MOD this morning, and added two backgrounds to the 1st sewer stage, each one moves at a different speed in accordance to the camera, and the mousers have a proper attack animation now. Also, the "dawn" stage has more details in the background like trees behind the fence and a sky that looks more like the sun is rising, it might not seem like much but it took me forever. Finally I have some motivation now since there's is people that are interested in this MOD, thanx a lot for providing me with more reasons to finish this. Here are the screenshots:

Wow, amazing artwork!!!

the foot clan will be humans or robots? judging for the colours and te uniform of the foot clan ninjas, I could assume they are robots...

ohh you are using the ******* Raphael!! (I like more the cheesy one from the old cartoon series) oh well...  :)

this looks promising!! hope to see it on action soon!!
