OpenBOR Wiki
« on: April 18, 2008, 11:11:21 am »
I've got a little present for the community. I just got a wiki set up on my webserver for OpenBOR. My plan is of course to have a wiki based manual, but also to provide information and possibly "how to play" guides for modules out there as well.

Now I literally just got it going, so there is little to see atm, but at least it's there, and since it is on a private webserver, (mine), we have full control and no stupid ad-links. I'm no expert on wikis, so I may have some things messed up, but it will all be ironed out in due time and we'll all be able to contribute.

You don't have to worry about it being shut down either; I've maintained a webserver in some capacity for 12 years now, a BBS before that, and I depend on it for a lot of professional stuff; it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The only exception to this would be if I discover someone trying to hack my server through the wiki, but we'll cross that bridge later.

Enjoy,
DC

Awesome stuff DC!  I will create a link on the menu bar to redirect to your site, for the wiki.

{Edit}

Do you know if its possible to have our user database link up with the WiKi?

This is great- a was a little weary of the OpenBor Editthis Page only because I don't know how long it may last. Honestly, I feel better having a Wiki thats maintained by a user/fan of the OpenBor engine. The only problem I foresee is the same one the Editthis page has: that it gets started and isn't added onto as much.

I have a suggestion for content. Borrow as much as you can from other sources to start with, you can always revise it later. This is the trick, the reason why someone would use this Wiki over others- content. Hopefully we can have one place (other than these forums to some extent) where all the information is in on place. Just an idea to think about.

Actually, on second thought I'm a bit nervous about connecting my DB to any outside servers, but I'll still look into it. It's wide open for adding users and editing though. All you have to do is regester a name and start editing; I even have an upload directory set up for images and such.

Since I don't know much about editing wikis, I copied an article over from Wikipedia on the Licking River (a medium sized river running through my hometown). I'm going to try and edit it into an article about one of Mr. Q's modules to get a feel for it. First thing I need to figure out is why the right aligned info box doesn't show up even though it's in the text.

In the meantime, anyone who has the ability/wish to add something, please feel free to do so.

Well the WIKI button has been added next to the FORUM button up top.  When people click on it it will bring you right to your site.  You should probably add a link to revert back here and add the SenileTeam Link too on the wiki.

I'd like to add to your Wiki, but I wanted it to be a separate page (possibly linked on the Main page). Do you have any idea how this could be done?

Yes, but it's odd. You run a search for what you want, and when it isn't found, it asks if you want to make it. Weird, but apparently that's how wiki rolls.

Sorry to double post. Ive added a Links page to the Wiki:
http://www.caskeys.com/arc/games/openbor/wiki/index.php?title=Links

It's not directly accessible on the main page (unless you use the search function) since I'm not sure of how DC will want that formatted.

Anybody (this means you) can alter/change/alphabetize/collate/revise the Wiki Links I just made. I wouldn't be offended, in fact I encourage it.

Looks really good, except I wonder how much longer some of those links will be alive. Some pretty old stuff going on there!

Yeah, it's sad. I checked to make sure if they still work, and they do. If you want to re-sort some of them into Abandoned that might work. I try to include as many of them as possible because their really isn't that much information or external links on the subject. Whatever you want to do. I think someone should port over both of the Manuals and I hope Mr.Q & OX add some stuff.

Well, I'm thinking that the front page should be a kind of portal. Like Modules click here, manual here, script reference here, that kind of thing.

But honestly, it's there and open for a reason. I consider hosting the place to be my main contribution; I'll contribute some and maybe correct some glaring errors if I see them, but for the most part editing and such will be up to you guys. I'd rather spend my BOR time on getting my mods going and coding new features for everyone. It's a permenant community controlled wiki, so there's no excuse not to use it.

Hey guys, whoever is doing all those manual updates (I assume Bloodbane), thank you, and here is an FYI:

You don't have to force a second space to get a line break, and when you do, it will always double space, which doesn't look very good. Instead, just put "
" where you want the line break to be.

Examples:

Code: [Select]
~This is an entry line.
~And this is the next.

Results:

~This is an entry line. ~And this is the next.

Code: [Select]
~This is an entry line.

~And this is the next.

Results:

~This is an entry line.

~And this is the next.

Code: [Select]
~This is an entry line.<br> ~And this is the next.

..or this

Code: [Select]
~This is an entry line.<br>
~And this is the next.

Results:

~This is an entry line.
~And this is the next.

Code: [Select]
~This is an entry line.<br>
~And this is the next.

~And here is a third.

Results:

~This is an entry line.
~And this is the next.

~And here is a third.

I went ahead and changed a couple of the top entries in the manual as an example. Also, when uploading images, don't worry about the size alert, but always try to use .png in place of .gif if you can.

Thanks,
DC
