Extracting PAK files.
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:39:41 pm »
Okay I've come to see that many, and I mean many people makes post's about how to extract pak files

Well this is why I made this topic eventhough there are still topics out there that explains it, though I wanted to make it clear for everyone here without reading manuals and so on.

Well here we go.

First of I need you guys to download

Neo Edit Pack (includes borpak v0.3 for Windows): http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item317
OR
borpak v0.3 (Windows, Mac, and Linux): http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item309

NOTE: This wasn't made by me and all the credits goes to the owner This is a Windows version only[/b]

Okay as you guys finished downloading that, I want you to put all the files that contains within this download into a folder, call the folder whatever you want.

Lets say we're going to call the folder Extract.

Now put the PAK file you wish to extract into the Extract folder that we made earlier. Now be sure  you don't have any folder in there called DATA, and if you do just rename it with something else.

Now, click and drag on your PAK file onto the borpak.exe.

After done so correctly, you will have a data folder with all the files that contained within the pak file you extracted.

Hope ya'll enjoy,

YS.

Thanks to Plombo for edit.

Removed an unnecessary step.  Looks good otherwise.

To supplement this tutorial, here's a Linux/Mac tutorial for extracting PAK files:

  • Grab borpak v0.3 (see my previous post for download link) and extract the version for your OS. Put it in the same directory as your PAK file.
  • Open up a terminal.
  • cd "[directory with borpak and your PAK file]"
  • Make sure you don't already have a folder called "data".  If you do, rename it to something else.
  • ./borpak "[name of PAK file]"
  • The mod's data can now be found in a folder called "data".  Enjoy.

I can't seem to get this to work... here on my Windows 7 machine it just flashes a command prompt window for a half-second then nothing happens.

Trying again...

Edit: Nope, nothing again...

Wow a post hasn't been made in here for so long. Am I the only one with this issue?

Drag and drop the PAK file onto the EXE.

Oh, and welcome to LavaLit. :cheers!:

And thank you!

I have CamStudio so I will show you exactly what I did. Perhaps I'm still doing it wrong...

I noticed how the PAK file came from a PS2 DVD...it doesn't look like a BOR disc.  What PS2 disc is that? ???

Also just to let you know, the PAK files are mainly audio. Programs I've tried in the past such as PakExplorer and Winpak have all failed due to "unrecognizable/invalid format" problems...

Oddly enough, one program allows it. It's called PSound.

This is good, however there are graphics files, etc. that should be accessible by the other PAK extractors, though to no avail.

Okay, I know your problem.  There are several unrelated archive file formats that use the PAK extension, since it's an obvious choice for an archive format.  Different programs work with different PAK formats:
  • PakExplorer is for the PAK format used in games by id Software.
  • Borpak (and any other PAK software you'll find on LavaLit) works with PAK files in a format that is unique to Beats of Rage and OpenBOR.
  • PSound is for the PAK format used by Playstation games, which deals with the PAK format you would find on PS2 discs.

You don't need to extract the PAK to play it in OpenBOR.  In fact, it's much easier and more convenient to play packed mods than extracted ones.

What PAK file are you trying to extract?

Also, borpak is not a DOS program.  It's a command-line Windows program.

Put your PAK file in the "Paks" folder.
