New artist in town
« on: May 16, 2012, 03:29:15 pm »
Hey all I'm GlassJawBoxer, and I'm looking to get involved with the OpenBOR community as an all-around artist for Sprite, objects and background work.

I was planning to cut my teeth on original Sprite artwork with the Mugen community but after I discovered beats of rage I've never been more inspired.  Brawlers were (and still are) my all-time favorite dead game genre and the projects I've seen done here are a dream come true.

My personal project is a rival turf 2 original reboot and this engine is perfect for what I have in mind.  My only problem with modding is that I have absolutely no coding skills, even simple nonprogramming coding skills so I'll have to collaborate with equal talents in that department in order to make it happen.  As an example here's some Sprite work I've been doing for this particular project.  My preferred process starts with freehand sketches all the way to digital pixel art.  A lot of side scrolling brawlers from my childhood influence my art over the years so it would be awesome to make something like this come alive.

I still have a lot to learn about pixel art and when I have a significant amount of work already completed (I know animations are what show real commitment.) I'll start calling for coders and programmers who would be interested in participating in this kind of project and of course offer my skills to their personal projects as appreciation.

Interested in hearing some feedback and any discussions about this topic are welcome.  Thanks for your time.

welcome to the forum and your way of thinking sound like me when i first started here trust me invest some time in learning how this engine works its very simple and powerful most people are too busy with their own project to be helping other people there is even a tool like Mugen Fighter Factory that handles all the coding for you (not sure what is called as i prefer notepad).

if you find yourself stuck post here and i am sure you will get the support you need best of luck !

Welcome!
Spriting from scratch is a lot of work!
I like the idea of giving a new episode to some non-mainstream game.
Hope you can work on it!!

Modding a basic game with BOR mechanics is really simple. If you want to give more possibilities, it may requires more work. :)

 Welcome Glassjaw!

Nice artwork you have there. Have you tried making animation from that character?
You know that animations are required to make game.

Well if that's the case then you should help a brother out.  ;D

Regardless of how simple it is I'm sure my retardation will still make it overwhelming, besides if I do all the art and the coding then I won't be able to enjoy playing it as much.  Not to mention collaboration is one of the drives of getting into this community, I plan to make all my work public domain which is why I'm choosing a licensed franchise.

I figured I'd go ahead and show all the other playable characters, I still got three more portraits to finish but I started animating so I'll come back to that.

do you draw all from starch or use some sprites as base?

All from scratch, except for Lord J. which I have given a more traditional karate fighting stance.  Only their fighting stances are comparable to their original sprites.

Just started animating, shouldn't take me too long.  I'm used to painting at extremely high dip's usually around your standard 800 to 400 sometimes even a thousand if I really wanna get some intense minute detail.  Working at such an extremely low dip with Sprite work is quite refreshing and I can crank it out pretty fast.  The only problem of course is bill paying work when it comes to time which is why I want to take my time but also get this completed as soon as possible.

Funny to see new designs for these characters.
Norton seems new...
Milan and Kazan have some anatomic issues... :-[
I hope you can animate them and make a great mod of it. :)
