Ultima RPG
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:47:16 pm »
Is anyone here a fan of the Ultima series?  Playing Pierwolf's Knights and Dragons Endless Quest and NickyP's Classic Fantasy has made me wonder if it's possible to do a top down (isometric 3/4) view RPG on OpenBOR.
I found a site that has all the sprites for the world maps, characters, creatures, items etc for Ultima 6 and Ultima 7.
ULTIMA 6 FILES
http://jfregnault.free.fr/Ultima6/ultima6.htm

ULTIMA 7 FILES
http://jfregnault.free.fr/Ultima7-BG/U7-BG.htm

If that's not possible, a compromise would be to use this world map, and do a quest system like K&D or ClaFan.

I might have showed you this already when we were PMing about this, but I've already released a topdown dungeon crawler mod. Or at least, an attempt at one: http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php/topic,6021.0.html

Try it. While I'm sure some of the other veteran modders could make it better, this is more or less how a topdown game would play on OpenBOR. You're free to use it as a base for an Ultima mod!

I didn't know about this!  Downloading now.

I've started an Ultima demo, using the Ultima 7 world map and have the Avatar walking around.  I'll check your demo out first, then upload my progress so you can check it out.

Looks good. :cheers!:
Perhaps the character can move a little bit faster.
Also the walking animation seems to miss sprites...

I can speed him up, I don't think he has more walking sprites, but maybe if I shorten the delay...

Is there a way to see where the walls might go (similar to the hit boxes) in OpenBor Stats?

I used obeditor to create walls when I made Gameboy Dungeon Explorer. But be careful! OpenBOR only allows you to use 40 walls per level. What you showed in your youtube video looks really cool, but I can tell you now it won't work. Thats why the levels in my mod are smaller. You'll probably have to break up the maps in smaller segments and link them together with endlevel branch items.

But don't take my word for it, try it out yourself.  ;)

Nicky, one step ahead of you:)

I'm doing Lord British's castle right now.  Never used Obeditor, will give it a shot, thanks!

Obeditor makes putting in walls so easy!  Thanks for the tip!

I added basic attacks to the Avatar, added a cyclops enemy and put them in Lord British's castle, added walls to show a bit more.

I've done some updates to this.  Added:
MAPS
1) World Map
2)  City level
3) Castle level
4) Wilderness level

CHARACTERS
1) NPC's
2) Enemies (Cyclops and Guard)
3)  Playable Avatar and Shadowlord

ITEMS
1) Food

DIALOGUE
1) Very basic template

It's all very basic now, showing how walls and exits would work on levels.  Attacks are still basic (hit and one spell).

Instead of playing as the Avatar, I think it might be cool to do something you could never do in the Ultima games -- play as a villain and do an RPG from the bad guy's point of view.  So the idea is you are one of the Shadowlords.
http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Shadowlords

We will add an inventory system later.

Right now I need help adding more enemies, NPC's.  I put a folder of sprite sheets in the chars folder.  Would love help converting these!

I also added Pierwolf's dialogue system, if you hit the NPC's in the town you'll see the basic start of it.  I haven't changed their actual dialogue yet (once we know what the quest is we can do that).

Here's the link to DOWNLOAD the demo:
http://www.mediafire.com/?irndvfh0i80vb3n

Thanks to NickyP and Pierwolf, I started this mod because I'd like to make an advanced RPG on OpenBOR and this is the foundation to build on.  I love the Classic Fantasy mod, however I think there's potential for this one because there's so many detailed sprites and backgrounds available from Ultima 7.
