In order to create an font you need to known first how to define the size of the font image.That have to do actually with the size of the letters or "letterbox"(see bellow) you want to use.Then if you known size of your letters,then you must multiply the dimensions of your letters x16.(the dimensions are count in pixels)
As example,if the size of your letters is width/9 pixels and height/9 pixels,then your font image size have to be width/144 and height/144,or 144x144 in other words.

The images bellow can be used as template in order to create your own font.Just pick up which image are fit with your letter dimensions.

Font size 144x144 for letters with 9x9 pixels

This is actually the default BOR font size which is used a lot.
This can be used as font,font2,font3

Font size 160x160 for letters with 10x10 pixels

This size can be used as font,font2,font3 as well and i thing is the maximum size for use as font,font2.I´m using this size to my mods.

Font size 192x192 for letters with 12x12 pixels

This size can be used as font3

Font size 208x272 for letters with 13x17 pixels

This size can be used as font4

Font size 256x256 for letters with 16x16 pixels

This size can be used as font4

Font size 272x272 for letters with 17x17 pixels

This size can be used as font4

OpenBOR actually can use up to 8 fonts used some commands to define which font is for what and not only 4 fonts.Check the manual/levels.text for more info.

From OpenBOR manual:

Thanks for the post/tutorial, magggas. :cheers!: I never had any idea what to do with the fonts until you showed a video of that. :) But I understand how it works but I never have time. (I feel like I waste my time on myself 'cause I'm too lazy to find fonts and make stages for my own mods.) By looking at that video, it looks easy and it's so useful.

I approve your OpenBOR tutorial and it's the first video you showed as an example! IMO it looks perfect. I don't know with others would say. I was planning to cover up some tutorials for OpenBOR but I couldn't find time to do so. You beat me to it, man. :)

About your question, here is an quick video of how to do this:

Since is hard for me to explain everything,i did that video as an quick/basic view of "how to".

As you can see the trick is made using the Blending Options on Photoshop.You can actually do a lot of more with this Blending Options.I have learn this from youtube videos,so if you search about Blending Options on youtube,you will find alot of good tutorials ;)

@maggas - Great post dude, very big thanks for this, exactly what I've been wanting to know.  Roel had explained it a while back, but I'd forgotten it all since.

EDIT - Is there a way to we can submit this to the wiki for archival purposes?   I'm working on rebuilding the OpenBoR Help.CHM too so info isn't lost.

My idea for this topic was actually to share this templates with you,just to make your life easy.Then..yeah,it was needed to add some information about these templates.My bad English and grammar does not allows me to make that great tutorials but..somehow it´s worked as i see  :laughing:

An other think i have in mind to do,is to capture an video to show how to make alternate palettes on Photoshop.What do you think about guys?
Or have you something else in mind that can be shown in a video?Something that you wonder how to do or you think can help new modders?

i did today my first atempt to do a full font sheet the old classic fantastic four tittle font
heres the result:

my mistake was that i forgot to bold the font and it becomes to skinny in my game, since my mod use 960x540

they are 17x17 and mayve will be useful to someone

i will now start to do the movie fantastic four fonts :)

I used to have an awesome app called (BitFont, GifFont or something like that) that would let you type out a bunch of text using a bitmap font sheet.  It was really handy for modding.  But for ages now I can't remember the name of the program and been unable to find it again.

cool tool it will help me for sure in future fonts

i did another font today this time was a  badaboom font that is used in marvel vs capcom 3

for this atempt they are ok to my mod size, but some letters got a strange spacements
but for those who are looking for mvc3 fonts here my file
