Building a new PC
« on: December 10, 2008, 01:34:47 pm »
So my Christmas present / graduation present to myself is to build a new pc. I received my case yesterday and the rest of my parts are coming today so I hope to start the build today or tomorrow. Any other PC builders out there? I don't do much modding of cases or overclocking, but I do like picking what ever parts I want and putting them together.

So new technologies that will be in this build is my first use of a solid state drive for my OS drive. Also, it will be my first jump to a 64 bit os. But I will most likely dual boot with vista 64 and xp.

Just thought I would share as I am excited about it.

Yes, I read that the other day but it is a much better read now that I can see the pictures. I don't do a good job of using what I already have. When it comes to PCs I always like buying new. Although I did go just about 30 months before this upgrade. I can now move around the other PCs i have running. I think my current desktop is going to get recommissioned into my MAME machine. And then I will maybe use that to upgrade my HTPC that does nothing but play streamed movies and music. Then I may take that one and start running a web server again.

I must say I have every pc I have ever built still running in some fashion at my house. Goes back about 10 years now since I have been building them myself. And yes my energy bill is high.

Yeah , I build my own PC's.

That way , I know exactly what I've got......

I tend to keep the same case for a couple or three years and upgrade whatever needs doing in that time.

Then , when the time/money is right , Everything gets replaced in one fell swoop.

Spoiler
System

The only thing "letting me down" at the moment is storage; A 1TB SATA drive , a 320GB (internal IDE) and 400GB(external USB 2.0). I'm thinking of getting more SATA drives to achieve that coveted "5.9" (it's 5.6 at the moment!)

The gfx card is also considered old (!) now too. I don't think I'll be swapping it just yet , though.

Holy Crap.... :wow!:  Those are some serious specs!!!  Last time we spoke about computer components, we had an identical setup, Now I think the only thing we have common now is the video card.

* Orochi_X stands up....

Hello. My name is Darren and I'm addicted to upgrading my components.

Yeah , I don't even use it as a gaming rig , besides homebrew. Although , I can play PCSX2 at full speed with sound (I actually need to limit the fps on most games)  ;D

I just keep finding myself bying new stuff all the time. I think this may be my third mobo since the last time we talked specs....

It's that damned Vista experience points system  :eyebrow_action:

Is the 5.9 the windows vista system performance number? (EDIT this was said right above need to read more carefully) What is the scale on that out of 10?

I will post my specs tonight after I have my new box up and running.

No kidding. I maxed out the memory on my server last week at 4G and thought I was doing good. My desktop is still at a measly 1G.

You have 6 gig of ram but don't you have to be running a 64 bit OS not a 32? I thought that was the case, the specs you posted said you were running a 32 bit os, a typo?

There is no 6 gig module. He is using multiple modules to get to the 6 gig.
