Which game should get an OpenBOR remake?
« on: June 24, 2011, 02:16:26 pm »
What game/s would you guys like to see get an OpenBOR facelift? Doesn't even have to be a beat-em-up.

Personally I'd like to see the old Sega arcade game D.D. Crew get remade as a module. For several reasons: First, there were some nice sprites and characters involved in it, but the gameplay was so poor as to render the whole thing almost unplayable - the OpenBOR engine would make it a far superior experience. And second, because of the beautifully ridiculous premise of the game. "Hey! Yo gotta bomb in ya amusement park!" isn't exactly up there with "Don't hang up Mr. Haggar, we have your daughter." when it comes to finding plausible reasons for grown men to strip to the waist and walk along pummelling everyone they meet.

@Jake RockStone:
I'm actually ripping sprites from that game to add on to my Sega Brawlers Mod, so you may get to see that.  ;)

Sweet, please be sure to include the utterly demented first stage music as an easter egg somewhere. When I was a kid, I was sure the voice sample was saying "You a DOCTOR!"

lol, I already used that track for a sonic stage in the older version of Brawlers. BTW, if you don't know by now, it's "Your a SUCKAH". I love that tracks, but I wish D.D.C. had more BGMs.

How are you doing that?
DC taught me about MAME's Skip Frame feature. It's been a while since I did it so I don't remember off hand, but after pausing the game, you hold Ctrl and press the pause button to skip frames, and take whatever screenshots you need. After that I take them Photoshop and color out the background, but that's something that should be done after you've gathered all the sprites you need. I'm doing the same thing with Three Dirty Dwarves on Sega Saturn, but with animeget.

EDIT:
Oh yeah, Undercover cops needs a OpenBOR remake to:

I would probably add 2 or 3 chars from different mame games for variety to.  ;)

Samurai Warrior. :cheers!: without a shadow of a doubt.

The old c64 version was awesome as a kid. to play it on dreamcast or psp would be fantastic.
If only I had a few skills..........

One mod idea I had was to combine the original TMNT arcade with The Simpsons. Both games use the exact same engine, similiar music style, and have similiar sprite sizes. So, you make one level set a remake of TMNT, and the other being The Simpsons. Have both sets of characters playable for both games, and yeah..

I found another copy of The Bouncer a few days back at a disc replay store. I had it a few years backs and after getting into it again, I thought of a mod roster for the three main guys:
Sion Barzahd = Terry Bogard
Volt Krugar = Maxima or Seth
Kou Leifoh =  Duck King

I think it would be cool to do this but go off in a similar story plot but totally different locations and scenes altogether.

on the same day I also bout Guilty Gear 2: Overture. It really makes me wish Guilty Gear: the Crusaders was better. I'd fix it up but too busy to get to it.

Really, pretty much any game, if done right. OpenBOR has a library full of "remakes", but let's be honest, most of them are atrocious. You can count with one hand the number that even try to replicate the original's mechanics and features, let alone succeed. Just as one example, there must be at least 10 Final Fights where Hagger doesn't know how to grapple, Cody can't pick up a knife, Guy forgot about half of his attacks, and every boss is a mindless mook with 1,000+ HP.

Now that more modders are starting to get an idea of what the engine can do the door is open for remakes of any kind, only this time with justice done to the source material.
