You mean Super Mega Beatdown by Imaninja with all Marvel vs. Capcom chars. My mod is Sega Brawlers Megamix, with mainly sega chars and some guests.

I think one of the Mana games should get a remake or "port." Yes, they are top down hack n slash games, but you could easily make a sidescroller out of it. There's plenty of frames for characters and enemies to have variety. If I didn't have 8,000 WIPs I'd probably make one just for the hell of it.

There's also a neat GBA beat em' up that no one here ever mentioned: Dancing Sword Senkou. Has some decent sprites and a clever (but TEDIOUS to master) fighting system. Drshnaps has a few of the playable characters: http://sdb.drshnaps.com/game.php?game=949

It's an IP. I released a WAY stripped down demo sometime back, but it was to demonstrate how script works. I don't support it (the demo) anymore.

Ever play Legend of Princess Hellsburn (if you haven't, you should)? Not really a beat em up & technically not Link, but you'd probably have better luck asking Konjak's permission to use his sprites then waiting for Link from Card Saga Wars to be finished (or available). Plus there are any number of amateur made sprites (of Link) all over the web. I also hear making your own can be pretty rewarding if your so inclined.

  There's plenty of official sprites from the Zelda series, and more than enough to make a bor mod out of. I'm guessing people just avoid doing it because they aren't clever enough to work with them right! 

Link is playable in a few mods though. There was a Zelda 1 NES mode made by a guy named gemini here a while back. Link is a character in Chrono Killer, and he's also a playable in my Gameboy Dungeon Explorer.
